Problem Solving

Saloon Sketch

Looking into more ways to generate ideas and to help me improve my problem solving by adding more ways to show the same idea. I have looked into sketching from a blockout which was a easy way to show how a scene will progress and you can add some more detail to the idea and adjust placement of some of the assets in this scene. I will be using this to show how and where I will be placing other assets as well as the mineshaft itself.

Idea Generation:
I began making mock ups for my projects using UE4 to make block outs and to get a general idea of how I want the lighting to look when you walk into the mine. Working on natural lighting by adding in cracks and wholes into the ceiling to allowing people to view darker parts of the mine instead of just being by fire/gas light. I made 4 block out designs each with small descriptions that describe whats in them starting with 2 simple designs and then moving onto some more in depth designs adding in things like pillars as support to hold parts of the cave up while it looks like it started to fall inwards.

Blockouts:

After asking my peers I decided to go with idea 4, adding in some of there ideas and feedback to improve it even more. The two major things I added in where the changing the size of the mine and making it more claustrophobic when you are in the mine and adding in rail tracks to allow the mine carts to move in and out if the mine easier. I really liked idea 4 and I have taken all feedback given by peers to improve my project.

Pickaxe Ideas

I made 2 ideas for my pickaxe with 2 diffrent heads and additions of cloths that go over the blade. I made these to give me a good idea of what i want to do for my final design I will also take a screen shot of all the ideas together to give a better example of what they can look like in the end of the design. The first pickaxe is sharp all the way through the head and the second one has a flat head at the end for cracking through rocks instead of just breaking them off in large chunks, the second design is what i am going to be using because it fits the time period.

Minecart Ideas

I made 3 ideas for my minecarts with small changes between each of them with planks changing size and the main cart part changing in shape and curvature. I made these to give me an example of how I want my minecart to look in the end of the project working with different shape’s for the cart portion of allows me to decide how much i want to put into the cart and allows me to get a good idea of how much room the entire object will take up in the scene, I am not wanting this to the be a main focus but something that is just in the area it is an asset to fill area of the mine shaft to make them look less empty.

Asset Compile

Placing some of the assets idea together gave me an example of what some of idea would look like in the scene and allowed me to see what types of the collections of assets that I could get, these will help with my final decision of what version of the each idea to use and what they will look like placed in the end scene all together.

I blocked out my lantern assets for my scene, mainly focusing on the glass that the light would be in. The design only changed slightly because I liked the main idea of the frame and just wanted to see what ideas i could generate for the glass and see how i could change it and make it my own style and still fit the theme of western.

Colour Ideas:

Working with colour ideas using Idea 4 as a base, sketching the final ideas over the block out allows me to get a good idea how the project will look in the end but I also did my colour ideas on the same page to help me get idea of how I want my entrance to look and what colour the sand and rocks are. Asking peers has helped me choose the top colour of my pallet and I found that it fit the era very well, I did not really like the gold colour on the right but during my research that was something that was used in other project of this theme.

Working on some more colour ideas for my other assets in my scene, I made sure to add a colour pallet that showed the shading colour as well. By asking peers helped I was able to get a bigger idea of what colour applet that i generate that I wanted to use and what else would fit the theme the best.

Textures:

I started researching some more textures and looking for ideas on how I could make my textures, these will help me generate my main textures for my scene using some of these as inspiration. I am working with a lot of rock textures and more of the realistic looking textures but I also looked into the cartoon side of textures as well just so I could get a idea of how it would look in a mock up and then converted into its higher quality counter part. The rock texture will be used for the walls and the main bulk of the mine shaft so i looked into some rock texture then moving forward I looked into some wood textures that I will be using for the support beams and the handles for my pickaxes as well as some of the rails. After these I looked into ores and metal that will be both used to add some more depth to some of the assets metal will be used for nails, pickaxe heads and minecarts. I have chosen these examples because they show what I am aiming to make and how i am aiming to make them look in my final presentation of the project.
